Baptism is a special sign of God’s generous love, forgiveness, acceptance and commitment to us in Jesus, and of the gift of God’s Holy Spirit. It is also a public expression of our trust in God and a definite commitment to follow Jesus for ourselves or to bring up our children in this faith and within the community of the Church, so that they might know all this for themselves.
Normally, when children or adults are baptized, it is at Sunday morning worship in front of the whole congregation. This is because baptism is about being made part of the life of the Church.
Physically, baptism is pouring or sprinkling water on the one who is being baptized, or, alternatively, plunging them in water. This is publicly declared to be in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Baptism is a powerful, once-in-a-lifetime picture of how we become new people in Jesus; but we also need to know and hold on to the reality behind the picture: God at work in us, through our beginning or continuing to trust God with our everyday lives. Find out more here…
