Reading the Bible

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Daily Devotion: time spent with God.

Christians believe there to be only one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the Father in his love has sent Jesus Christ, his Son, into the world to save us from our sins by dying for us and rising to life again; he has called us to live by faith in Jesus Christ through the power of his Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Many people will say, “I wish I had his/her faith”, so how do we get our Faith?

God can bring us together to worship him on a Sunday, but by Monday when our daily stresses kick in, God can seem very distant. Our God is a loving and understanding God. He knows of the troubles we have and has given us the bible, which is God’s Word to all men, our guide to everyday life, and spiritual food for the soul. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16.

By seeking God’s active presence in our lives through spending a quiet time each day reading his Word (the bible) we can learn of the purposes God has for our individual lives. We respond by praising God, praying to him, and so learn what he plans for us and requires of us in our daily lives.

Many people find it useful to follow a structured pattern for reading the bible in their quiet time. Newhaven Church promotes the use of Scripture Union daily notes to help with daily quiet times, which give not only the passage, but a brief commentary as well. They can be accessed here: Today's bible reading and notes.
